Mangal Dosha: Meaning, Detection Rules, Names, and Common Myths

Mangal Dosha is a placement in Vedic astrology where Mars occupies specific houses in a birth chart, traditionally read as bringing friction or intensity into marriage and domestic life. It is also called Manglik Dosha, Kuja Dosha, Bhauma Dosha, or Angaraka Dosha depending on region, detected from three chart reference points, and — the part most explanations skip — weakened or cancelled under ten specific classical conditions.

What does Mangal Dosha mean?

Mangal Dosha means Mars sits in a house classically associated with friction, delay, or intensity in marriage and temperament, checked from three separate points in the chart rather than one. “Mangal” and “Manglik” come from the Sanskrit name for Mars and are most common in North India; “Kuja Dosha” uses another name for Mars and is more typical in South Indian usage, where the 2nd house is also more consistently counted as a trigger.

How is Mangal Dosha detected?

Detection checks Mars’s house position from the Lagna (Ascendant), Chandra Lagna (Moon), and Shukra Lagna (Venus), using whole-sign houses. Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from any of these three is the core, most consistently cited trigger; many traditions, South Indian practice especially, also include the 2nd house. Zero triggers gives Non-Manglik status; one trigger gives Anshik (Partial) Manglik; two or three give full Manglik status. The complete astronomical and classical method is documented on our methodology.

Why are the six houses weighted differently?

Because their classical significations sit at different distances from marriage. The 8th house governs the durability of the bond and carries a weight of 90; the 7th governs the partnership itself at 80. The 1st, 2nd, 4th and 12th touch marriage only indirectly and weigh 55, 40, 45 and 60 respectively.

Does Mars have to trigger from all three reference points?

No. One reference point is enough to register a dosha. Triggering from one or two produces a Partial (Anshik) status; all three produces full Manglik status. The severity score is a separate measurement from that count, and the two can point in different directions.

What cancels Mangal Dosha?

Ten classical conditions weaken or cancel Mangal Dosha: Mars in its own sign or exalted, Jupiter’s aspect or conjunction, Yogakaraka status for Cancer and Leo Ascendants, five named sign-house exceptions, a Mercury-sign exception specific to the 2nd house, and Navamsa strength — the full breakdown with classical sources is at the ten cancellation rules. A dosha being present is only half the analysis.

What does Mangal Dosha’s severity actually mean?

Severity depends on which reference point triggered the dosha, which house was involved, and how much cancellation applies — not the yes/no label alone. The Mangal Impact Index™ converts this into a single 0–100 score; see low Mangal Dosha and high Mangal Dosha for the practical difference.

What are the common myths about Mangal Dosha?

Three myths repeat far more than any others.

That it always means a troubled marriage. Classical texts describe tendencies rather than certainties, and a large share of Manglik charts carry one or more cancellation factors that change the reading substantially.

That it ends at age 28. The chart placement is fixed at birth and never changes. The belief is widespread enough to warrant its own page — see the age-28 myth.

That every calculator should agree. Different classical conventions, each defensible, genuinely produce different results for the same birth data. Why calculators differ covers the three specific causes.

How do I check my own Mangal Dosha status?

Our free calculator checks all three reference points and all ten cancellation rules in one result, using your date, time, and place of birth.

Every Sanskrit and technical term used across this site is defined in the glossary, including the three reference points, whole-sign houses, and the ayanamsa.

Where should you go from the definition?

The six trigger houses covers detection and weighting; each house then has its own page. The ten cancellation rules covers what reduces a score, with every rule sourced.

Kuja Dosha covers the regional names, Anshik Manglik covers partial results, and is Manglik Dosha real covers what is and is not evidenced.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mangal Dosha the same as Kuja Dosha? Yes — the same condition under different regional names, with Kuja Dosha more common in South Indian usage and more consistently including the 2nd house.

How do I know if I have Mangal Dosha? Checking Mars’s house position against the three reference points and six trigger houses determines this; a calculator does this automatically alongside a cancellation check.

Does having Mangal Dosha mean something is wrong with my chart? No — it is a specific, well-documented placement, and the same tradition describing it also describes how it is commonly cancelled.

Does Mangal Dosha depend on my birth time? Yes, for one of the three reference points. The Ascendant changes sign every 80 to 145 minutes, so a wrong time can move Mars into a different house from the Lagna. The Moon and Venus references are less time-sensitive. What can be calculated without a birth time covers the partial case.

Does a Manglik result mean I should not marry? No. Classical practice treats it as one factor among several in matching, and cancellation rules reduce it substantially in most charts. The severity score matters far more than the label.

Which houses actually trigger Mangal Dosha? The 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th, counted from the Ascendant, the Moon and Venus. They are not weighted equally — the 8th carries 90 and the 2nd 40, which is why two Manglik results can differ enormously in severity.

Can Mangal Dosha be present without affecting marriage? The classical material describes tendencies rather than predicting outcomes. A dosha with strong cancellation and a low severity band is a very different situation from a high uncancelled score.

Does my ascendant determine whether I can be Manglik? It determines which six signs can carry the dosha for you, and which cancellation rules are available. Mangal Dosha by ascendant covers all twelve.
