What score is considered acceptable?
Conventional practice treats 18 and above as workable, 24 and above as good, and below 18 as difficult. Those thresholds are convention rather than classical instruction, and different practitioners set them differently.
Does a high Guna Milan score cancel Mangal Dosha?
No. Nothing in the classical cancellation material references Guna Milan at all. The ten cancellation rules concern Mars’s sign, its house, Jupiter’s aspect, the Ascendant and the Navamsa — the Guna Milan total appears in none of them.
Why is Guna Milan calculated from the Moon?
Because all eight kootas derive from the Moon’s nakshatra position. This is the structural reason the two systems are separate: Guna Milan reads one point in the chart, while Mangal Dosha is assessed from three — the Ascendant, the Moon, and Venus.
Where does Mangal Dosha fit into the 36 points?
Nowhere. It carries no koota and contributes no points. This is the single most common misunderstanding about Vedic matching, and it is worth stating flatly: a 32/36 Guna Milan score tells you nothing about whether either chart is Manglik.
The two are assessed in parallel and reported together. Classical practice treats Mangal Dosha as a separate check that can override a good Guna Milan result, which is precisely why it is not folded into the score — a factor that can override a total cannot also be a component of it.
Can a match score well on Guna Milan and still be flagged?
Yes, routinely. A pair can reach 30 of 36 on the eight kootas and still have one chart carrying a heavily weighted 8th-house Mangal Dosha with no cancellation. The koota score would not reflect it, because no koota measures it.
The reverse also holds. A low Guna Milan score is not improved by both charts being clear of Mangal Dosha.
Which should be checked first?
Mangal Dosha, for a practical reason rather than a doctrinal one: it is the faster check and the one more likely to stop a match outright in traditional practice. Guna Milan requires both nakshatras and a koota-by-koota calculation; Mangal Dosha requires only the position of Mars against three reference points in each chart.
Does a Manglik result override a good koota score?
In traditional practice it frequently does, which is why so many matches are declined on Mangal Dosha grounds despite acceptable Guna Milan totals. Whether that weighting is justified is a separate question — see is Manglik Dosha real for what the evidence supports and what it does not.
What does this calculator do and not do?
This site calculates Mangal Dosha only. It does not compute Guna Milan, Ashtakoota scores, or nakshatra matching, and the compatibility score it produces for two charts is a Mangal Dosha compatibility score rather than a koota total.

What else is excluded?
Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Dosha are koota-level findings within Guna Milan, not Mangal Dosha findings, and are outside this tool’s scope. So is Kaal Sarp Dosha, which is a different condition entirely involving Rahu and Ketu rather than Mars.
