Manglik matching compares two charts for Mangal Dosha specifically — each partner’s status, severity and cancellation factors, plus how their Mars and Moon placements relate to each other — and it is one narrow check inside marriage matching, not the whole of it. Gun Milan’s 36-point Ashtakoota system is a separate and broader assessment.
What does Manglik matching actually check?
Manglik matching checks five things, in this order: each partner’s Mangal Dosha status, each partner’s severity score, each partner’s cancellation factors, the relationship between the two Mars placements, and the relationship between the two Moon placements.
The order matters. Most disagreements about a match come from stopping at step one. Two charts can both return “Manglik” and be very differently placed — one at a net 22 with three cancellation rules firing, the other at a net 88 with none. Treating those as the same input is what produces the rejections families later regret.
What are the four pairing cases?
There are four pairing cases, and classical guidance treats them differently:
| Case | Classical reading | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Both Manglik | Traditionally the most reassuring pairing — the influence is held to offset | How comparable the two severities are |
| One Manglik, one not | Where guidance is most cautious, and more so as severity rises | The Manglik partner’s cancellation factors |
| One Anshik (partial), one not | Generally treated as workable | Which reference point triggered, and the house |
| Neither Manglik | No Mangal Dosha question arises | Nothing further in this check; Gun Milan still applies |
The mutual-Manglik case is the one most often misstated. It is described in popular sources as a straight cancellation — two Mangliks cancel out. What the tradition claims is narrower: a comparable influence on both sides is read as balancing rather than compounding. Our compatibility scoring reflects that as a credit scaled to how much dosha there is to balance, so two mild Manglik charts offset each other almost completely while two strongly afflicted charts offset each other only partly. See the Couple Compatibility Calculator for the full factor list.
Which pairing types rank most favourably?
Two charts entirely clear of the dosha rank highest, followed by two Manglik charts of comparable intensity, then a one-sided pairing. That ordering is consistent across charts even though exact figures vary — read the ranking as the finding rather than the number.
Does matched severity matter, or just matched status?
Severity. Two Manglik charts of very different intensity are closer to a one-sided pairing than to a matched one, because the offsetting principle depends on comparable weight rather than on a shared label.
Does it matter which partner carries the dosha?
Astrologically no — the detection rules are identical for both charts. Culturally, the scrutiny is not symmetric, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Manglik Dosha in a girl’s chart and Manglik Dosha in a boy’s chart cover the same detection logic alongside the very different conversations the two results tend to trigger.
How does severity change the guidance?
Severity changes the guidance more than status does. A Severe reading paired with a Non-Manglik chart is where classical caution is genuinely concentrated; a Negligible reading paired with the same chart is treated as workable in most traditions. The specific case people ask about most is covered at can a low Manglik marry a Non-Manglik.
This is also where the label can mislead in the other direction. A chart labelled Anshik — partial, one reference point — can score higher than a chart labelled fully Manglik, because status counts triggers while severity weights houses. Read the score.
Is Manglik matching the same as Gun Milan?
No. Gun Milan (Ashtakoota) scores 36 points across eight koota categories covering temperament, health, mental compatibility and progeny, and Mangal Dosha is not one of them. Manglik matching is a separate check applied alongside it. A match can score well on Gun Milan and still raise a Mangal Dosha question, or the reverse. Anyone presenting a single number as covering both is combining two systems that classical practice keeps apart.
What does this check not tell you?
It does not predict whether a marriage will succeed, and no reading here should be used to end a match on its own. What it gives you is a specific, checkable statement about two charts — which is useful precisely because it is narrow. The broader questions of compatibility, timing and temperament sit outside it.
To run both charts, use the Couple Compatibility Calculator. To check one chart with the marriage houses weighted, use the marriage calculator. For how the pairing is read once both results are in, see Manglik and Non-Manglik Marriage.
Which pages cover the individual cases?
Manglik and non-Manglik marriage covers the one-sided pairing, and can a low Manglik marry a non-Manglik covers it at the mildest band.
The compatibility calculator scores two specific charts. Mangal Dosha and Guna Milan explains why a Guna score is a separate finding.
How does this relate to Guna Milan?
Guna Milan scores compatibility out of 36 points across eight koots, calculated from the Moon’s nakshatra. Mangal Dosha is not one of those eight — it is a separate check read alongside the total rather than folded into it, which is why a couple can score 30 out of 36 and still have a serious dosha finding.
Mangal Dosha vs Guna Milan sets out how the two systems relate, which to read first, and why a high koot score cancels nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Do two Manglik charts cancel each other out? Partly. The offset is scaled to the severity involved, so two mild Manglik charts balance each other almost completely while two severe ones balance only partly.
Is Manglik matching part of Gun Milan? No — Gun Milan’s 36 points cover eight other categories entirely. Mangal Dosha is checked separately alongside it.
Should a match be rejected because one partner is Manglik? Status alone is not a sufficient basis. Severity and cancellation factors change the reading substantially, and a Negligible score is a different situation from a Severe one.
Which partner’s chart matters more? Neither — detection is identical for both. The difference in how the two results are treated socially is cultural rather than astrological.
What is the best possible pairing score? 96, for two charts entirely clear. Mutual-Manglik pairings cap at 88.
Is Guna Milan part of this? No. Mangal Dosha and Guna Milan explains why the two systems are kept separate.
Where to go next
For a two-chart reading, the compatibility calculator analyses both charts with cancellation applied to each. the Manglik matching guide covers which pairings classical practice treats favourably, the ten cancellation rules explains what can reduce either chart’s figure, and what the evidence supports is worth reading before treating any of it as settled.
